Abstract

The transition from arithmetic to formal algebra is one of the most consequential and theoretically examined challenges in middle school mathematics education. This study investigates how conceptually oriented instruction, integrated with structured mathematical problem-solving, influences algebra readiness among Grade 7 students. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed with 120 seventh-grade students randomly assigned to two instructional groups across an eight-week intervention: a Conceptually Oriented Instruction group (COI, n = 60) and a Procedurally Oriented Instruction group (POI, n = 60). Algebra readiness was assessed using a 50-item, five-subscale instrument spanning variable concepts, equation balance, proportional reasoning, pattern generalization, and functional thinking. Pre-test scores confirmed group equivalence prior to the intervention (t(118) = 0.39, p = .698). Post-intervention analysis revealed that COI students achieved significantly higher algebra readiness gains (M = 32.0%, SD = 11.5) than POI students (M = 18.9%, SD = 11.5), yielding t(118) = 6.24, p < .001, and a large effect size (d = 1.14). Equation Balance and Variable Concepts subscales showed the greatest differential gains across groups. Error frequency analysis identified persistent misconceptions--particularly concerning variable interpretation, equal sign understanding, and pattern generalization--as systematically more prevalent in the procedurally oriented group. Qualitative findings from classroom observations and student interviews corroborate these results, revealing that problem-centered conceptual instruction promotes flexible, transferable algebraic reasoning. Pedagogical and curricular recommendations for strengthening algebra readiness in the middle grades are discussed.
